How to Get Started with Embroidery: A Super Simple Guide

Maybe it's just me, but I always thought that in order to get custom embroidery I needed a complicated machine that cost thousands of dollars and would take up half of my living room. I was very happy to learn that's not the case :) I recently discovered an embroidery machine, which only takes up a small portion of my sewing table and is less than a thousand dollars. It was also very intuitive to use and after a brief skim of the instruction manual and some poking around I was able to get up and running in a very short amount of time. I've never used an embroidery machine before so this is really saying something.

This little guide will help you get started, plus I'll show you a really cool machine that’ll make things way easier—the Poolin EOC05 Embroidery Machine (great for beginners, trust me).

I Love Embroidery

I have always been obsessed with embroidery. Whenever I go thrifting embroidered items are always the first I go for. I can't explain it. Embroidery is like this magic mix of stitching and art. Whether you’re making custom pieces for your wardrobe or spicing up your home with DIY decor, it's super satisfying. Plus, it’s a great way to chill out and get creative at the same time. And it makes for great custom gifts for friends and family!

Here’s What You’ll Need to Get Started:

  • Fabric: You’ll probably want to start with something simple, like cotton or linen. They’re easy to work with, and perfect for beginner projects.
  • Embroidery Hoop: This is what holds your fabric tight while you work, so your stitches don’t end up all wonky.
  • Needles: There are special embroidery needles you’ll need—they’re different sizes depending on the project and thread you use.
  • Embroidery Thread (aka Floss): This is a fancy name for the thread used in embroidery. It’s usually cotton and comes in so many colors it’s almost overwhelming (in a good way!).
  • Stablilizer: This is a stiff fabric used to ensure proper embroidery, but when it's done you easily tear away the excess.
  • ALL of the above (except fabric) is included with the Poolin EOC05 Embroidery Machine

This specific machine was designed to be beginner-friendly, but it's also able to execute complex designs for more experienced users.

    Here’s why it’s awesome:

    • Big Touchscreen: You can easily pick and edit designs without fiddling around. It’s kind of like using a smartphone.
    • Up to 4” x 9.25” Embroidery Area: Pretty big for an at-home embroidery machine! It also comes with a smaller 4" x 4" hoop as well for smaller designs
    • 135 Built-In Designs: Yup, you don’t have to come up with your own designs right away. The machine has a ton already loaded up—from cute little flowers to fonts, so you can start personalizing stuff immediately. Plus you can combine them right on the screen!
    • So Many Tutorials: Don’t worry about figuring out how to use it on your own, there are a ton of tutorials on Facebook and YouTube. They also offer free 1-on-1 lessons with their staff.
    • Automatic Needle Threader: No more squinting or stabbing your fingers trying to thread needles. The machine does it for you. This is the future :)

After being a beginner myself and figuring out the machine here are some of the tips I think will help you quickly get started.

    A Few Tips for Beginners

    • Start Small: Don’t try to stitch some complicated masterpiece right away. Simple is best when you’re learning.
    • Use Stabilizer: This little trick helps keep your fabric in place and stops it from puckering (which is just a fancy word for "wrinkling up" while you work).
    • Practice a Little: The more you practice, the more confident you’ll get. Use the built-in designs on your Brother PE545 and mess around with different styles to find what you like.
    • Mix It Up: Try different colors and threads. There’s no right or wrong when it comes to embroidery, so experiment and have fun with it!

There is a nearly infinite list of projects you can do with this embroidery machine, here's a list of some ideas to get you started.
